Although TurboTax is more popular and TaxACT is sometimes less expensive, I use the middle-of-the-road H&R Block Tax Software.
At the time I’m writing this now, Amazon is selling tax software H&R Block Tax Software 2013 Deluxe + State for $19.99. The Deluxe version works for me just fine. The Premium version, which supposedly includes more handholding, is $10 more at $29.99. You can get either version as a CD shipped or as a download for either PC or Mac.
I use the H&R Block tax software, installed on my own computer, not online, because it gives the best value. You can often buy it at half price as the more popular TurboTax ($49 for Deluxe, $64 for Premier on Amazon right now). From my past experience, it works just as well as TurboTax.
If you used TurboTax last year, H&R Block Tax Software can import the TurboTax file format. A one-time transition will save you 50% of the software cost year after year.
When you buy it on sale, H&R Block Tax Software is about the same price as TaxACT but it’s easier to use than TaxACT in my opinion.
With the installed software, you can legally use it to prepare multiple returns. If you use online software, you have to pay for each return separately. You can save multiple copies of your own returns and do what-if’s. You can easily go back to a previous year’s return when necessary.
Amazon changes prices often, sometimes multiple times a day. Most of the time the price was around $30 for the Deluxe + State version. It dipped down to $22 only briefly on January 3. If you like the $19.99 price, act fast.
